Katie Wallyn is a 34 year old missionary who is devoting all of her efforts towards working with the abandoned elderly in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. She has founded an ongoing meal assistance for as many people as she has funding for, assists as she can with essential everyday needs, and has recently begun to oversee Mission St. Luke’s housing reconstruction. Although “housing” for these poor elderly people consists of a one room wooden framed house or possibly a small room for cooking, it is a life changing construction for them.
Katie maintains a blog where she tries to keep the world updated on her activities. You will find many pictures and explanations of her great work in San Lucas on her site and we encourage you to visit and become familiar with the plight of these forgotten people.
Katie once said: “being a missionary is not as glamorous as it sounds. Because you become one with the people you serve… and this includes the joys and the pains of their life. You rejoice with them, you cry with them. You eat with them, you go hungry with them. You work hard with them when there is work, and you worry with them about if and when there will be work again. You rejoice in good health with them, you also get sick with them.”
